The Theater of the World
I traveled across the Adriatic Sea, from the Island of San Servolo in Venice to the Island of Korčula in Croatia, the supposal place of birth of Marco Polo, carrying with me a framed drawing I made from a sketch of Aldo Rossi’s Theater of the World (floating temporary theatre the Italian architect made for the 1979 Architecture Biennale). I stayed at the Marko Polo Hotel, and substituted an existing picture on the wall with my own drawing. During the 98 hours trip I read and annotated the margins of the play El gran teatro del mundo of Calderón de la Barca, which was later made into a unique book edition.
El teatro del mundo
Viajé a través del Mar Adriático, desde la isla de San Servolo en Venecia, Italia, hasta la isla de Korčula en Croacia, el supuesto lugar de nacimiento de Marco Polo. En el tiempo de la familia Polo, Korčula era parte de la República de Venecia y fue el punto de partida para los viajes del mercader a Asia. Llevé conmigo un dibujo enmarcado que hice a partir de un croquis de El Teatro del mundo, obra del arquitecto italiano Aldo Rossi, realizado para la Bienal de Arquitectura de 1979. Al llegar a Korčula, me hospedé en el Hotel Marko Polo, y substituí un cuadro existente en la habitación con mi dibujo, después de lo cual emprendí el camino de regreso a Venecia. Durante todo el viaje de 98 horas, leí e hice anotaciones a la obra El gran teatro del mundo (1635), del escritor español Calderón de la Barca.
